Furnace check up

Tips to get Peak Performance from Your Furnace

When your furnace operates efficiently, it will not only make your home more comfortable, but it will also help you save money on utility bills. During the colder months your furnace runs round-the-clock to keep you warm. There are things you can do to make your furnace more efficient and effective.

Change your air filters

Air filters play a crucial role in your home’s heating system. They prevent dust, dirt, and other debris from clogging the furnace. If you have not changed your air filter in the last few months, it is likely that it has accumulated a lot of debris. That could cause it to no longer function as it should. The simplest thing you can do to get better performance from your furnace is to change your air filters. Ideally, this should be done before the start of the heating season. Depending on the place where you live and other conditions, you might need to change it again after 3-4 months of use.

Clean the ductwork

The heated air is circulated in your home via the air ducts. When the air ducts are clean, it is much easier for the furnace to do its job of keeping your home warm. However, over time, the ductwork can accumulate dirt, dust, mold, rodent droppings, and other debris. This can cause the performance of your furnace to decline and it will also adversely affect your indoor air quality. To prevent this, you should have your ductwork cleaned professionally at least once in two years. During ductwork cleaning, the HVAC professionals will also look for any leaks or damage in the ductwork. By fixing these leaks, you can further improve the efficiency of your furnace.

Ensure that your home is well-insulated

It is important that the environment your furnace operates in should be insulated properly. Ensure that there are no leaks in your windows, doors, ceiling, or attic that allow drafts in and out of your home. All your doors and windows should be closed and properly sealed. If you find any broken seals, you should replace them immediately. The two most important places to check are the attic and the crawl space. Proper insulation ensures that warm air does not escape outside and cold air does not enter your home. This helps the furnace work more efficiently.

Schedule furnace maintenance

The best thing you can do for your furnace is to schedule professional furnace maintenance. Even the most advanced and high-end furnaces require routine maintenance to perform efficiently. Check your furnace’s user manual to find out how frequently you should schedule professional maintenance for your furnace.
